"The Danube Delta" packages
Danube Delta`s amazing wildlife

Apart from the crowded Black Sea beaches and the rest of the country, the water logged Danube Delta is a place where life has hardly changed for centuries and where boats are the only way of reaching many settlements. 100s of species of birds migrate through this area or come to breed, during spring and autumn. You`ll be amazed by the sight of large V-shaped flock of pelicans flying overhead. The Danube Delta is their only breeding-ground in Europe and the notable Lake Matita and other few places are strictly protected Nature Reserves.
Among hundreds of species of birds identified here, such as the black vulture, the cormorant, the great white egret, white and black swans, yellow and red herons, black-winged stilt, great bustard, wild ducks and geese and so on, plants, fish (60 species - carps, breams, sheat fish, tenches, pikes, sturgeons which produce caviar) and other animals (wild boar, hare, red fox and so on) display the same diversity and a great interest to hunting addicts. We can organise hunting parties in famous areas like: Razim, Caraorman, Uzlina, Crisan, Sulina, Ilgani, Cardon.
When the river level is high and many parts of delta`s ground are flooded, remains of old oak forests like Letea and Caraorman alongside willow, poplar, ash, wild cherry, hops and vines which flank the river banks resemble a tropical mangrove forests and swamps.
By far the most beautiful and worth mentioning plants are the white and yellow water-lilies, yellow irises, water mint, bulrushes, and several insect-eaters or amphibious plants as bindweed.
The river`s main flow is divided into 3 arms. The Chilia Arm in the north, the central Sulina Arm, which was widened and straightened at the turn of this century for sea-going vessels and finally the winding and twisting Saint George Arm (Sfântu Gheorghe) to the south with a number of cleared channels that connect it to Lake Razelm (Razim) and the other arms and lakes and lagoons.
The scene that predominates in the Delta consists of miles and miles of reeds on a surface of 300,000 ha which attenuates the excessive air currents, with their roots knotted together sometimes pulled off by the river current forming large and small floating islands (plaur).
The fact that everything in the Delta is constantly moving, changing is obviously shown by the whole land advancing several metres a year into the Black Sea.
Only a small part of Delta is solid land (one seventh of it) sometimes flooded, the rest of it is a pure tangle of hundreds of channels that branch from the 3 major waterways, lakes, small ponds, lagoons and so on. The beauty of the Danube Delta must be seen to be believed. This description does not give you the idea of the floating reed-bed (plaur) scenery, the image of a sun set watched from lake Razelm or Furtuna, nor of what a grind (sandbank formed from silt brought down by the river) and a dense dark forest on it, can look like. You`ll have the chance to benefit from the local people`s hospitality, to learn their incredible way of living, to marvel at their specific reed-covered huts. It`s of typical wooden planck construction, decorated inside with mural oil paintings, especially on the ceilings and a bread oven and steam bath, "bania", very similar to our modern sauna.
A journey to the Danube Delta offers you the possibility of tasting the traditional cuisine which is obviously based on fish (fish bortsch, spitted fish, brine pickle of fish with garlic dressing - a dressing prepared of pounded garlic, salt and local ingredients, fish meat balls).
If you take a day trip excursion to the Delta, you`re unlikely to see more than the main Sulina Arm as far as Maliuc and back using the local people`s fast boat. If you want a proper view of the Delta - and it`s well worth having - you could choose between our 3 or 5 day packages (see the price panels) starting from Tulcea, the Delta`s innermost point.
