"ROMANIA at its best"
Indeed
a warm welcome to Romania!
Travelling in
Romania is as impressive as it is rewarding. The country`s mountain
scenery and great diversity of wildlife, its cultures and people`s
country and city life leaves few who visit unaffected. It`s not
just the beauty of its landscapes and its ancient cities, but
the people`s character, culture and the amazing hospitality you
meet especially in mountain areas or in the countryside make the
trip there very attractive.
The Carpathian
Mountains (one third of the Romanian territory) certainly
have their share of impressive gorges and rock faces and good
skiing areas (many of them in the Southern Carpathians, reasonably
equipped with modern tows and lifts) but many slopes are covered
with miles and miles of varied forests.
Rolling upland
plateau has a different kind of appeal. Its slopes are covered
by smaller, broken stretches of woodland by orchards and vineyards.
Gentle stream sparkle in its valleys. Much of this hilly land
is extremely fertile and the villages built in different styles
in different parts of the country display both the country people`s
individuality and a tremendous degree of traditional craftsmanship.
Many have changed very little in the last centuries.
The Danube`s
Delta`s wildlife ranges from lushy forests, animal galore,
a huge variety of fish and a host of birds including Europe`s
only pelican breeding colonies. Yet this isn`t Romania`s only
region of outstanding wildlife interest. Brown bear, Carpathian
stag, chamoix, lynx and endless other creatures inhabit the Carpathians
forests, the hill or plain forests and are subject for hunting
parties organised by our agency.
Modern coast resorts
such as Mamaia excellently laid out on a narrow sandbar separating
the sea from a fresh water lagoon and a string smaller spots to
its south, such as Eforie Nord, Neptun, Mangalia and so on - provide
everything the beach addict can wish for. All these include excursions
to the Danube`s Delta, sightseeing among very striking Greek and
Roman remains and Orthodox monasteries in Dobrogea, visits to
magnificent monastery churches in the Bucovina whose outside and
inside walls are covered with superb 16th century frescos (the
churches have been for years on UNESCO`s World Heritage list).
If anyone intends
to tour Romania, there is a mass of lovely towns as well
as superb scenery places like Cluj, Iasi, Sibiu, Timisoara, Brasov,
Sighisoara, Oradea, Arad, Alba Iulia, Suceava.
There are magnificent
Orthodox monasteries throught the country, mostly tucked
away in hidden spots. Many were built to serve also as fortress-refuges
against invaders and have preserved their fortifying walls. In
the remote northwestern Maramures, you`ll find amazing small village
wooden churches often with amazingly tall, slim spires. The highest
soars over 50 m from the ground. They range in date from 14th
to 19th centuries. Some still retain traces of original wall paintings.
All were built without the use of a single nail. They were example
of skilled joinery.
